Fireworks
Popularly thought to have originated in China, although some say India also has a strong claim. Initially, these were what are now termed firecrackers in that bamboo was roasted with the intention of providing a loud noise to scare off evil spirits and not to provide a visual display.
It was not until gunpowder was invented that pyrotechnics really took off! (Sorry. I couldn't resist it)
Although firework displays are common for particular events, e.g. Bonfire Night in the UK and Independance Day (Fourth of July) in the US, it seems that such shows are becoming more and more popular for any other celebration or event such as New Year, weddings and engagements, birthdays, Mondays, Tuesdays etc.
From sparklers up to the more impressive fireworks, such as Roman Candles, Catherine Wheels, Fountain Batteries, Saturn Missile Batteries, Cherry Bombs, Mortar Tubes and Bottle Rockets it seems there are few such devices that you cannot buy from some store somewhere, these days, even though many sound more like weapons.
(Many of the spellings of searches that have found this page look like they've had a firework go off in them, such as firewrks, firewoks (from the original Chinese versions?), firworks (big bottle rockets using trees for sticks?), firewarks (strong accent?), firerworks, fireorks (for Tolkien fans?), fireworls, firewroks, firreworks, fireworkds, ireworks (for angry people?) and, the Norwegian sounding, fireworsk)
